Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KB (Kilobyte) uses the decimal system: 1 KB = 1000 bytes. KiB (Kibibyte) uses the binary system: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes. Our converter uses the binary system (1024) which is how operating systems report storage.
Why does my 1TB drive show less than 1TB?
Manufacturers use decimal: 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. But your OS uses binary: 1TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. So a "1TB" drive shows as ~931GB in your operating system.
How many photos can fit in 1GB?
It depends on image quality. At 3MB per photo (typical smartphone): about 333 photos. At 25MB per photo (DSLR RAW): about 40 photos.
How many gigabytes are in a terabyte?
1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 Gigabytes (GB) in binary, or 1,000 GB in decimal. Most operating systems use the binary definition.
What is the largest unit of data storage?
Common units go: Byte → KB → MB → GB → TB → PB (Petabyte) → EB (Exabyte) → ZB (Zettabyte) → YB (Yottabyte). A Yottabyte is approximately 1 trillion terabytes.
